Never before has a museum been as lively as this! Come face to face with a road sweeper in the middle of the wall, share a secret with a stranger, be amazed by a dish-washing marathon, encounter a pensive Superman, be moved by benches, insert your head into a picture, or think of Spinoza or Bush. Thus the wording for the introductory text for this exhibition.
Museum visitors became a vital and integral part of the "performance installations", which proved to be lively, fluctuating and situational. However, their transient nature was transformed into an enduring moment by virtue of their being exhibited for six weeks. The resulting suspense this creates leads you to consider how the concept of the museum and the way art is perceived can be altered when the works of art are no longer static and "museal", but rather "living".
The Living Museum entered new territory with the intention of suspending the expectations people typically have of museums. In connection with our acquisition of Nedko Solakov’s "Ein Leben (Schwarz und Weiß)" / A Life (Black and White) and the Documenta work by Tania Bruguera for the MMK collection, this exhibition further elaborated our concept of a museum. It serves to emphasize the function of the museum as a place of encounter, a promoter of dialog, and a place of reflection and vision.
