The meadow itself is heavily polluted with garbage, the cloud cover over the scene is grayish and creates an almost threatening atmosphere.

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2015

In an exhibition taking place at the MMK 3 during the photography triennial RAY 2015, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst presents the finalists of the 2015 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize: Nikolai Bakharev, Zanele Muholi, Viviane Sassen and, with a joint project, Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse.

This year's choice of finalists mirrors the wide variety of approaches in the area of photography; the featured works range from videos and portraits to socio-documentary photography. Nikolai Bakharev's photos, for example, are devoted to the dichotomous relationship between the public and private realms. His views of Russian bathers on public beaches in the 1980s and '90s allude to a hypocritical politics he links with the permissibility of pictorial depictions in the former USSR. In Zanele Muholi's portraits and scenes of homo, bi, trans and intersexuals in South Africa, the boundary between the private and the political becomes fluid. Political and societal transformations in South Africa are also the focus of the work by Mikhael Subotzky und Patrick Waterhouse. Together they created an album of image and text material recording the history of a formerly exclusive and meanwhile decrepit high-rise apartment block in Johannesburg. Another finalist to be represented in the show at the MMK 3 is the contemporary photo artist Viviane Sassen, whose abstract pictures play with the boundaries demarcating photography, fashion and sculpture.

The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize is an annual distinction that was established in 1997 by The Photographers' Gallery in London and since 2005 has been presented in cooperation with the Deutsche Börse Group. With a purse of 30,000 £, the prize is awarded to contemporary photo artists who have made a significant contribution to photography the previous year in the form of an exhibition or publication in Europe. It is considered one of the most prestigious international art prizes. This years winner are Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse.
